What not to do

Don't take allergy medicine in order to see if you have allergies or a head cold. You will just become a tired, spaced out person with a head cold.
A tired person with a head cold who now only drinks decaf coffee.

I've had good luck with Tavist (NB: not "Tavist-D") as an antihistamine that doesn't knock me out. Sudafed turns me into a zombie, and Claritin just doesn't doesn't work for me. But I like Tavist. Then buy some Excedrin, which is a good way to get caffeine in your system, while convincing yourself that you're actually taking medicine. - greg
